As stated by a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.

“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Background and Recent Actions

This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.

Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Defends Actions Amidst Pressure

The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

Although the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to confirm a wider geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
