As Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Picture Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the iconic beach as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, detected loud noises echoing across the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the incline soaked, she heard someone moving up behind her. The person was a rescuer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery During Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams treating dozens of those hurt.

Local Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the violence becoming a temporary hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen taking action, such as entering the water to rescue people in distress.

After the tragedy, comments of appreciation circulated widely. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the responders who showed that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The squad of rescuers published a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind messages and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the kindness directed at our team,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the violence started right into late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
