One extended voyage through the Australian Coast is being halted following the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was stranded by the cruise liner on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but separated from the party for a rest. The ship left without her and came back several hours later after the crew realised the passenger was missing.

A major search operation located her remains the next day.

Investigative bodies are investigating the event, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator announced that passengers and crew on the vessel were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be issued a full refund, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".

Officials also published an revised announcement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Master" banning any further travelers from entering the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the liner in Cairns upon its coming back.
