Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
