Just prior to his name was called, a nervous worry darted through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star again."

"Tonight represents a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."

On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The result was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the year's best team.

Constant Motion

Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.

"I've had a frantic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "My plan is for a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to slow down, even after completing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.

"More majors, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the key."

Team Triumph

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the collective trophy, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his close friend's award.

"Those are the moments that will remain with us indefinitely so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is really cool," he stated. "Seeing Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Future Goals

Fleetwood hopes to secure his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

Prior to his departure, an additional topic was raised. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"If they stop conceding four goals at home," he replied with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a hint of positivity around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that he is looking on the positive aspects.
