The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
